 Reviews

“Gaining Wings” should be required reading for any pet parent that has received the difficult news that they are losing their beloved family member.  Families with children, who find it especially difficult to understand the loss of a pet, will find the book helpful explaining the process and answering the child’s questions.  This book walks the family through how to recognize the signs of a pet that is slowing down and then prepare for the difficult decision to euthanize the pet.  Most significantly, the book outlines the importance of finding ways to enjoy the pet’s remaining time with the family and honoring their memory once they are gone.  This is a well-written and beautifully-illustrated book that will be a great recommendation for families struggling with the grief of losing a pet.

"It's rare that a children's book teaches both the child AND the parents. Gaining Wings provides many useful examples of how families of all ages can prepare for pet loss and grieve “healthfully”.  These lessons are done in such a fun yet gentle way for parents and kids.  As a veterinarian, I love having such a wonderful book I can recommend for clients to help guide their families through the loss of beloved pet"

Gaining Wings is a relevant and gentle introduction to loss and grief.  In addition to its unassuming approach to normalizing loss for children, the concept of a bucket list inspires readers to explore the importance of living well, and with intention, while facing the end of life.  Kudos to Tammy and Joel for creating such a significant book!

Gaining Wings is an excellent book empowering parents and caregivers with the tools necessary to help their family work through the passing of a beloved pet. The beautiful illustrations and engaging story of Sookie the dog crossing the rainbow bridge will capture the interest of young children, leaving a message of hope. The tips scattered throughout the book enable adults to better prepare themselves and their family emotionally and psychologically for the inevitable when the times does come. This book is a much appreciated addition to my bookshelf for myself and my family.
